Invite opportunities for empathy into play.

Teaching empathy via play is a great learning tool.

Play is preparation for real life. Think of it as your child’s “internship” for what is to come!

  • Let’s care for a doll or stuffed animal together.  I can practice showing empathy to these toys.
  • Encourage me to join others in their play.  Gently suggest or show me little ways to play with friends. Explain to me what my friends are playing if I don’t seem to understand.  I may be missing out on clues to their play if I cannot make sense of their communication.
  • Read books to me about feelings and being a good friend. Act out the pictures.  The pictures in books can make emotions and relationships very clear! I can look at them at my own pace, and revisit them often.
